SYNERGISTIC ACTIVITIES

  • Work with Youth:  established an environmental education program for children from high-poverty, inner city neighborhoods in New Haven. Oversaw program for three years, transitioned program management to Yale Students for Environmental Engineering and Sustainability (YSEES).  Worked with about 100 kids over the three years. While at U of Idaho, helped the Nez Perce tribe get an EPA grant to develop K-12 environmental education materials.
  • Work with Undergraduate Students: Helped to establish YSEES and served as its faculty advisor; was Director of Undergraduate Studies for Environmental Engineering for four years. Served as faculty advisor for the American Indian Science and Engineering Society and the Native American Student Association at the U of Idaho.
  • Teaching: Innovative teaching methods, including active and cooperative learning, Socratic dialogue method; recipient of Alumni Association Award for Faculty Excellence, U of Idaho.
  • Grant Panels: DOE, EPA, NSF.
  • Manuscript Reviews:  Applied and Environmental Microbiology; Biodegradation; Bioremediation Journal; Biotechnology & Bioengineering; Environmental Science and Technology; Water Research; ASCE Journal of Environmental Engineering.
  • Professional Memberships: American Chemical Society; American Society for Microbiology; American Society for Engineering Education; Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors; Water Environment Federation.
