- Waymire is Co-PI on an interdisciplinary NSF grant from DMS NSF: Collaborative Research: Mathematical and Experimental Analysis of Transport Phenomena in Highly Heterogeneous Porous Media with R. Haggerty (Geoscience), E. Thomann (Math), B. Wood (Civil Engineering). The PI has given several one-week interdisciplinary teaching/research workshops on this research and its applications in river basin hydrology at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (Summer, 1994), Bulgarian National Academy of Science (Summer, 1997), Aarhus University Center for Mathematics/Physics/Stochstics (Summer, 2001), University of British Columbia (Fall, 1997), in recent years. A research workshop organized by the OSU FRG group will be convened July 21-August 1, 2003, at the NSF Institute for Mathematics and its Applications in Minneapolis entitled Probability and Partial Differential Equations in Modern Applied Mathematics.
- Waymire has been involved in interdisciplinary research collaborations over the past 25 years of his career, primarly in areas of hydrologic and atmospheric sciences, but also more recently in natural resource economics. He is co-author with Rabi Bhattacharya of the graduate textbook, Stochastic Processes and their Applications, Wiley, NY (1990). This textbook is a mathematics textbook intended for an interdisciplinary audience.
- Waymire has served committees of professional organizations such as American Geophysical Union Precipitation Committee (1984-88); Bernoulli Society Committee on Probability and Statistics in the Phyiscal Sciences (Chair, 1994-2000); NAS Committee on Applied and Theoretical Statistics (2001-04). Waymire co-organized a special panel session on Teaching/Research of Probability & Statistics in the Physical Sciences at the annual meeting of the International Statistics Institute in Istanbul with David Vere-Jones of Victoria Universtiy of Wellington in 1998, and co-organized and convened a national panel at the National Science Foundation devoted to Current and Emerging Research Opportunities in Probability, May 29-31, 2002.
